OUR FOUNDER

Our beloved late Founder Mr. Ameer Sher Mohammed Khan was a far thinking visionary and philanthropist who recognized an urgent need for a fully English Language based educational Institution in the Uva Province and as a result Al-Barakha International School became a reality. He was an internationally acclaimed athlete popularly known as ASM Khan, and known locally as the ‘Smiling Miler’ and in India as the ‘Wonder Boy of Ceylon’

He was the first Sri Lankan athlete to run a sub four minute mile, in 1960, while still representing his school, St. Joseph’s College Bandarawela. He first ran for his country in 1958 in the bilateral Meet between India and Ceylon held in Bangalore and he won the 1500m and 5000m on the same day beating India’s top athletes.

It was at this meet that he got the title of ‘The Wonder Boy of Ceylon’ from the Governor of Bangalore.

He broke the Asian Games record in 1960 in Indonesia in the 1500m.

In boxing for 3 years he was unbeaten ABA champion in the pin weight class and earned another name, ‘The Tiger fighter from the mountain area’.

He also played soccer for his school and the Municipality B Team.

In 1992 recognizing the lack of a proper school for English Education in his beloved hometown of Bandarawela he founded Al-Barakha International School and was its first Chairman until he passed away in 2016.

He is remembered today and idolized for his sporting prowess which put Sri Lanka in the Asian spotlight and we give him heartfelt thanks for being a far thinking visionary by founding our beloved school but more than that, respect and cherish his memory for being a loving husband and father with an untarnished image as an entrepreneur and businessman who always held the well being and education of children in the highest priority.
